Environmental technicians monitor the environment and investigate sources of potential pollution by performing laboratory and field tests. Environmental technicians are typically part of a team that can consist of scientists, engineers, and technicians from other fields, working together to find solutions for often complex environmental problems.
What Does an Environmental Technician Do?
An environmental technician can play many different roles. At Eastern, while working in the field a common task would be conducting soil tests. We often complete residential soil tests when a new homeowner is buying a property and needs it scanned for an underground storage tank. If we locate a tank, we will then complete soil borings around the tank to determine if there was an oil leak or contamination of the ground soil.
Some other tasks our environmental techs complete are:
- Collect water samples to test for the presence of pollutants.
- Indoor air quality testing for mold, asbestos, and other pollutants.
- Operate light and heavy equipment such as Vactor trucks, Guzzler trucks, Geoprobe sonic rigs, and more.
- Analyze data and prepare reports.
- Hazardous waste removal and transportation.
- Oil spill remediation.
As you can see environmental technicians sure have their hands full! You never know what problem you may encounter. A big part of being an environmental technician is having to solve complex environmental issues. Being multifaceted is key.
How Do You Become An Environmental Technician?
In order to become an environmental technician you generally need an associate degree or a certificate in applied science or science-related technology. However, some jobs do require a bachelor’s degree in chemistry or biology depending on what your day to day tasks are.
